Tab For a Cause

I started using Google Chrome a little over a year ago, because my version of Internet Explorer didn't really support Tumblr.  I love me some Tumblr.  (Hi, guys!)  This turned out to be one of the better decisions I have made on the internet, although depending on your point of view, that may not be saying much.  Chrome has awesome extensions, one of which I just discovered today because of Tumblr.  Fellow Tumblr user lupinesque shared it with all of us and now I'm sharing it with you.

Tab for a Cause lets you use the tabbing feature of Chrome or Firefox to benefit great charities, at no cost to you.

You probably know that several browsers, Chrome and Firefox among them, let you have several 'tabs' open at one time, meaning you can visit multiple websites simultaneously.  Right now I am on Blogger.com, Facebook, Tumblr, LiveJournal, and my email.  Tab for a Cause enabled me to make a donation to charity for each one of those when I opened it.

It's honestly very simple.  You go to the website.  Read about what they do.  Download the application (it takes seconds and installs itself).  Then open a tab.  It's like magic!  Please note that at this time, Google Chrome and Firefox are the only web browsers which support Tab for a Cause.

Each time you open a tab, Tab for a Cause's sponsors will donate a fraction of a cent to one of the charities they support.  Doesn't sound like much, I know, but it adds up fast.  If you're a Facebook user, you can connect to your Facebook account; this will let you track how many tabs you have opened since you installed the application, and it shows you how much money has been raised for the charity being displayed.  See, every time you open a tab, it brings you to a page about one of the charities, and you can read about the fantastic work they're doing.  Tab for a Cause currently supports seven different charities, including one of my personal favorites, Water.org.

If you'd rather have new tabs still go to your previously selected homepage, like the website for your email provider or something, no problem.  Just click on the icon for the application and, in the bar where it says 'undefined,' change it to the url of your preferred site.  You can also, while you're there, change the amount of your contributions that you want given to different types of charities by adjusting the sliding bars.
